October 5, 2015 HOWARD STERN INTERVIEW Highlights

On Scarlett Johansson breakup:

HS: So let's get right into it? What happened with you and Scarlett? And if you don't wanna talk about it...
MRM: You'll understand...
HS: Fuck no, talk about it, haha!
RQ: Hahaha! Screw your feelings and need for privacy! We want the dirt! Give us the details!

MRM: Haha. Listen man. That's one of those situations where...listen. I will never say a bad word about that girl. She's one of the most amazing human beings I have ever met. We are still close. Still friends. Still talk all the time. Who knows, maybe one day we will try again. I hope we do. But right now, it's just not the right time.

HS: Right time for what?
MRM: For us to do what I was trying to do.
HS: Which was get married.
MRM: Right.
HS: So she broke it off.
MRM: It was her idea that we take things a little slower, take a break.
HS: That's why I hate those public engeagements in front of everybody. It forces her to say yes and then later when she actually thinks about it...
RQ: She realizes she only said yes because of the pressure, not because she really wanted to say yes.
HS: Exactly. Was that it? She came back later and said, I don't really think I'm ready for this. I just said yes cause we were on national TV....?
MRM: Uh...I wouldn't say all that. It's a little more complicated than that. There's maybe some of that in there, but I just think in general, even if I had done it in private, she would have gotten cold feet. She just has alot of stuff going on, alot of trust issues. Remember, her parents got divorced, her and Ryan (Reynolds) got divorced. She's a little gun shy. And I can totally understand that. It's frustrating...but hey, I gotta respect it.
HS: So in the meantime, what? You can see other people?
MRM: Yea that's what we agreed on.
HS: How's that working out?
MRM: At first it sucked, then I embraced it a little too much, haha...
HS: Started banging everything in sight...and I'm gonna get to some of the chicks you been linked to in the time since the break up...
MRM: Uh oh.
RQ: So where are you with it now?
MRM: Honestly, it's weird. Everyday is different but the last while I've been at peace with it. I'm not gonna say I'm ready to accept a life without her can be just as happy as one with her, but therapy and alot of soul searching has me convinced that...maybe there's other people out there that can make me just as happy, maybe we're not meant to be with just one person, I dunno. Maybe it's shit you just tell yourself to numb the pain but maybe it's true. Every breakup you think...'Oh my God how will I ever go on without her!!!' then a couple months later, you mean some new chick and you forget why you ever cared so much about the last girl and you're all about the next girl. Then you go through phases where you try to tell yourself, 'I can be like those people, cause I have friends like this, male/female, some famous, some not, who just don't NEED to find a new girl to get over the last one. Just be genuinely happy being single and whatever comes, comes. No need to go hunting to fill that void.' But I've discovered, I mean I already knew this I guess, that I'm happiest in a relationship.
HS: Me too.
MRM: Yea. No point in lying to yourself. There is definitely a void that needs to be filled. And it's healthy to recognize that. It's okay. The key, I think, is to just not jump into something for the wrong reasons, just to fill that void. It still has to be with the right person.
HS: So where did you guys leave it off at? This is a break up or just a break or what?
MRM: I'm considering it just a break. She's gonna do her thing, I'm gonna do my thing. And ya know, we didn't put any specific time limit on it but, we're just gonna check in with each other from time to time, and if she doesn't find love and I don't find it, maybe we try again ya know? Nothing is set in stone. It's kind of up in the air right now to be honest. I don't want it to be this way but I don't really have a choice. But in the meantime, we're cool man. Don't be surprised if you see us hanging out, going to a premiere or something. We don't hate each other. That's the thing. There's all these rumors I cheated or she cheated. No one cheated.

HS: Yea cause we saw you with that Shaence chick, which I'm about to ask you about, curious about that one, and we saw Scarlett holding hands with her Avengers co-star Chris Evans shortly after you guys went your separate ways. You know what's going on there?
MRM: Listen, like I said. She does her thing. I do mine.
HS: So you had no idea about her and him?
MRM: After we decided to take our break she said to me that they would be talking for a while, so she gave me a heads up. I wasn't shocked by those photos. But I don't think it's anything serious. I saw some photos the other day of him and Minka Kelly walking their dogs or something, they used to date too. I dated her too, haha. So, who knows what's going on. It's all crazy.
HS: Everyone's fucking everyone in this town.
MRM: Seems that way.

ON DATING SHAENECE RICHARDS BRIEFLY:

HS: So speaking of you doing your thing..lets get into it. First off, this Shaenece Richards chick.
MRM: Yea.
HS: That's Charlie Sheen's kid right?
MRM: Yea, Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen's oldest daughter.
HS: How old is she again?
MRM: She turned 20 last April.
HS: Ok, cause she looked a little young for you...
MRM: Haha, no she is. That's one of the reasons it didn't last long, but she's a cool girl.
HS: How'd that start?
MRM: She reached out. Wanted me to write a song for her.
HS: Yea right. Write a song. She said that...but in reality she wanted that schlong.
MRM: *Laughs* Wow!
HS: How long before you hit that?
MRM: Come on Howard!
HS: Oh don't be a gentleman now. Couldn't have been long.
MRM: No not too long. She was actually pretty aggressive. She was a big fan. That's the funny thin about this, I guess you can call, the next generation of actors coming up. It's so weird to hear from the Miles Tellers' and Logan Lermans and Ace Butterfield's of the world tell you 'man I grew up watching you, I wanted to act because of you'. It's weird because I'm really not THAT much older than them but they started watching movies around the time I was getting in the business I guess. And I guess kids these days don't go back as much as we did to watch films from the 60's and 70's and 80's, they just kinda go back to the 90's and 2000's. But yea it's crazy.
HS: Why'd that end? You cut it off?
MRM: We just got real busy, it wasn't anything serious anyway so...

ON MEGAN FOX AND HER DIVORCE:

HS: What about Megan Fox? I don't think it's a coincidence a few days after she gets divorced you and her are spotted out together...
MRM: Yea that was me being bad, haha.
HS: You were fucking her?
MRM: Her and Brian were having problems, she reached out to me. It started as just friends helping each other. I told her what was going on with Scarlett. Then one thing led to another as they say...and hey...it happened.
HS: You dirty dog you...
MRM: Listen, Megan hasn't been with many guys in her life. After she cheated on me with Brian they dated for 4 years then were married for 5 (years) so...it would make sense for her to come to me.
HS: So it was basically revenge. You take my girl from me....I take her back from you.
MRM: If that's what you wanna call it. That wasn't my intention, but she made it seem like they were over anyway, it just wasn't announced yet.
HS: Makes sense. So there's no chance of you guys becoming a thing, or what that just a one time fling sorta thing?
MRM: Oh there's no way we'd get back together. No way in hell, haha!
HS: Why you say that?
MRM: Listen, I love strong women but there's just something about Megan. She's a great girl, one of my favorite people in Hollywood, and I mean that. You won't find a more genuine, no bullshit ... on or off camera, real as fuck person. She's so chill and real and very cool, not to mention sexy as hell. But she and I are two Alphas. She's very stubborn and headstrong. We're both Taurus'. I'm May 4, she's May 16. Same signs clash. She's the type who has to wear the pants in the relationship. She doesn't let the man be the man. She always has to have the last word, not very big on compromise. Every relationship needs that and she has a problem with that so I just know we'd fight ALOT, about the stupidest things. And I don't wanna be in a relationship like that. And it's a shame because she such an awesome fun sexy chick with alot to offer. She really is great, but a bitch to get along with on a daily basis. I just don't see it ending well so I just choose not to even fantasize about the notion.

ON THREEWAY WITH SAGE AND LEA SEYDOUX:

HS: So let's get into this threesome you had with your Live Today Die Tomorrow co-star Lea, how you pronounce her last name...?
MRM: Seydoux..like 'Say...Do'. It's French.
HS: All I know is this chick is hot! Her and Sage, another French chick?
MRM: Yea they were in this amazing French film in 2013 called Blue Is The Warmest Color. Lesbian love story. Lots of graphic sex. Won an Oscar for Best Foreign film.
HS: How'd you pull that off?
MRM: I have no idea. I honestly can't say it was planned. We just got drunk one night and it sorta, happened.
HS: How was that???
MRM: Amazing!!!
HS: I bet.
MRM: Wish I could give more details but I honestly don't remember much of it.
HS: I don't care how drunk I am I'm remembering that.

ON RONDA ROUSEY:
HS: So any others I'm missing here?
MRM: Other girls?
HS: Yea.
MRM: A few...
HS: Like who?
MRM: Haha, can't say.
HS: Oh come on, don't give me that.
MRM: Ok maybe there was a famous female MMA fighter in there too...
HS: Ronda Rousey?
MRM: Can't confirm or deny. Don't wanna get my ass kicked.
HS: Wow look at you.

ON HYPNOTIA SCANDAL:

RQ: Now what happened with that girl who sued your restaurant?
MRM: Oh thats no big deal, its already over. What happened was she was trying out for the job and it's recorded and she didn't end up getting the job. We have the promos that run featuring footage of the waitresses serving the customers and we used her in one but she got mad because we didn't pay her for that or get her permission so we had to take her out of the promos.

ON JESSICA LOUNGE:
HS: So any new girlfriends we need to know about?
MRM: I been hanging out with people. Nothing too serious.
HS: Like who?
MRM: Jessica Lounge. She's a singer and actress.
HS: I seen her in anything?
MRM: Yea she played The Rock's daughter in San Andreas.
HS: Aw man she's hot!
MRM: Yea we went on a date like 3 or 4 years ago but something happened and we lost touch, so we're talking a little bit again, we'll see what happens. Cool girl.
HS: Look at you.

ON WHETHER HE THINKS IDRIS ELBA WOULD MAKE A GOOD JAMES BOND AND THE HOLLYWOOD DIVERSITY PROBLEM:
RQ: Now I wanna get your opinion on something. Some people want Idris Elba to be Bond after you, and some people have gotten some flack for saying they don't think there can be a black James Bond. What do you think?
HS: Yea I was wondering what's your take on that whole thing?
MRM: (long pause)....Well I could be all P.C. and say 'Yea anyone can be Bond. A white guy, an Asian guy, a black guy, a Mexican guy. A donkey. But I don't think it's about that. Look, Bond was originally written by Ian Fleming to be Caucasian, dark hair, blue eyes. Now yes some actors have come along who aren't exactly that but all have least been some type of variation of that. It's like a beloved comic cook character. If they came out and said, from now on Wolverine will be Asian, or black, fans would be pissed. So why should Bond be any different? Now I understand the goal. Hollywood needs more diversity, but this isn't the way.

But yea the diversity issue is a big deal. I see it all the time. It needs to change. How many big chances did a guy like Taylor Kitsch get to be a star? Battleship? John Carter? Sam Worthington? He got Avatar and Terminator Salvation. Ryan Reynolds got Green Lantern, RIPD, Blade Trinity, now Deadpool. Hollywood hands these types of guys, these generic one note actors, franchise after franchise, even after they have flopped at the box office time and time again. Why? Yet a guy like Nate Parker, a very talented, charismatic, good looking black actor would never even get ONE of those opportunities. That's a problem man.

And it quite honestly, it pisses me off. I put my heart into this shit. I take the craft of acting very very very very seriously. Daniel Day Lewis serious. I hate to see motherfuckers out here phoning it, cashing paychecks, mugging for the camera, doing the same shit over and over again, like that's cool. That shit ain't cool. It ain't cool with me man. Actors are out here busting their ass waiting tables trying to pay rent and go on auditions, going to acting, train their ass off, dreaming of getting that one role but instead it goes to same people over and over, who either don't have the talent to give a good performance or who have gotten too lazy and complacent to give one. But yet they keep getting work and big jobs, and then actors like Nate Parker and the Viola Davis' of the world and the Chadwick Boseman's, the David Oyelowo's, all these guys gotta grind and grind and grind and grind and grind, just to get ONE good opportunity. Yet Hollywood gives the white guys chance after chance after chance. It's a huge problem.

And to be honest, it's not all Hollywood's fault. People think there is some big secret racist agenda in Hollywood. That couldn't be farther from the truth. Hollywood is the most liberal place in the world. It's run by gay people, people who are in interracial relationships left and right, black guys with white wives, white guys with asian wives, people who bang hookers and do coke, people of all religions or no religion, people from all over the world. People who just wanna make art, entertain, and make money doing it. But it's the making money part that fucks it all up. Because even though Hollywood itself is very Liberal and open minded and progressive, it knows it's audience is still very conservative and backwards at times. Sometimes we forget how big this country is and how many red states we still have not in New York or L.A. where there's still racism and homophobia and just general ignorance. It sucks but those people pay to see movies too and Hollywood has to cater to them. So their the ones who have to change. People ask me all the time what it takes to be a movie star and I always say a key everyone forgets to mention or is too scared to mention is looks. Sex appeal. There's a reason certain actors who are amazing at what they do can't bring in big box office opening weekend and it's because women don't wanna fuck them. Same thing for women. There's tons of amazing female actresses out there who can't open a film because they're too ugly or too old. It sounds awful but it's true. There are studies that show this. All Hollywood cares about is money. So the day white teenage girls in Ohio get all wet for Michael B. Jordan and pay to see his films the way they pay to see Ryan Gosling's films, that's the day black actors will get those roles that keep going to everyone else. The day men would rather see an older woman on screen than a hot young one is the day Renee Russo or Helen Mirren will outgross Scarlett Johansson or Megan Fox.

HS: That is so true man. I couldn't have said it better myself. It's not all Hollywood, it's the audience too. They're the ones paying to go see the films. If they don't like the actors getting the roles, then don't see their movies.
MRM: Exactly.

ON UPCOMING PROJECTS SUCH AS OSCAR BAIT FILMS, A NEW BOOK, AND ACTING REALITY SHOW SIMILAR TO 'THE VOICE':
HS: So what's coming up next for you man?
MRM: Alot man alot. I'm so excited for what's to come. First off with films. I'm going for the gold. I am taking my acting alot more serious than ever before. I got a film coming out this December with Daniel Day Lewis and Tom Hardy called Lost in the Wilderness. The guy who did Birdman directed it.
HS: Yea I see the previews for that it looks INSANE.
MRM: OH you have no idea. It's a classic man. A new classic. Just you wait. I am so pumped for people to see that. I thought I was ready to work with someone like Daniel but I had to up my game to a whole new level...
HS: What's that guy like man...
MRM: Let me tell you. He's the Michael Jordan of acting. The absolute pinnacle. He pushed me to be everything I could be and then some. You do your best to dig deeper and deeper and really really go there without over acting, which is the danger, with someone like him. He elevates everything. It's a different level of commitment man. Everything to him has to be real. He had no cell phone, no microwave, no heater, nothing that didn't exist back in the day. If he got sick he got sick.
HS: Wow.
MRM: Yea man. And that effects you. It has to. You have to measure up. And on top of that, after the shoot, which was when I finally got to actually have a real conversation with him, because all during shooting he is 100% in character, he told me, 'you're good, one of my favorites to watch, I watch all your films, but you can be better, I want you to go for it. Because I'm retiring and I don't see alot of actors out here who can do what you do'. When he said that to me man...
HS: What a compliment, especially coming from that guy.
MRM: I wanted to cry. He motivated me. He made feel like I was letting him down. But he was right though. I haven't a role that has really tested me or emotionally fucked me up for a long time. Maybe I got complacent. I dunno. Maybe focused too much on my music. Whatever it is, I lost the passion I once had. The passion to go to those dark dark places you're scared you may never come back from. But he got me thinking, it's time to embrace that fear again. Get crazy again. Change the game, do what's never been done. So I got this coming out then I signed on to two Tom Hooper films. He's a phenomenal director who did The King's Speech. First we start next year with the Stephen Hawking story where I play Stephen Hawking then after that I'll be playing the first man to ever have the gender re-assignment surgery to become a woman.
HS: So you're gonna play a woman?
MRM: Yep.
HS: How the hell you gonna pull that off?
MRM: You'll just have to wait and see man. But I'm going for it. I'm not playing around anymore. It's time show people what I can do.
HS: Man, you're my favorite actor working today man, you're the best.
MRM: And on top of that I got a book coming out about dating advice called "No More Mr. Nice Guy: Every Man's Guide to Discovering True Confidence and Understanding the Science of Attraction". It's gonna help guys get laid. Then I am directing a movie based off it. Already in talks with some big names to star in it, can't say who yet though. It's still early.
HS: Wow, when's that coming out?
MRM: Most likely 2018 or something like that. I got alot of movies to film before I can really focus on that. I got a comedy with Emma Stone coming where we play a couple who know they have the winning lottery ticket but they lose it and have to find it. There's a dark thriller with Anne Hathaway and Joel Edgerton I got in the works as well as a Cameron Crowe film about musicians with Shia LaBeouf and Shailene Woodley on the way as well. I'm really really excited about that one! It might be one of my favorite films I've ever ever done. Seriously. Plus obviously I got Suicide Squad next summer with Jared Leto playing the Joker and Will Smith and Margot Robbie are in it too. Plus a reality show I wanna create for network TV about aspiring actors.
HS: Oh yea?
MRM: Yea it will be kinda like The Voice but for acting. Instead of singing they perform scenes. People from Hollywood will be the judges, but I will guest judge the premiere and from time to time. The winner gets to sign with CAA, which is the biggest agency in Hollywood. We're gonna try and discover some real talent. I can't wait.
HS: America's Got Talent better watch out!
MRM: Oh yea. I'm coming for your spot man. But yea I got some big ideas. The next few years are gonna be very very exciting.

ON LIVE TODAY DIE TOMORROW:
HS: Ok they're telling me you gotta go soon so let's wrap this up. Last but not least lets promote this movie. Tell us about 'Live Today Die Tomorrow'.
MRM: It's amazing. Probably the best Bond film I've done yet.
HS: It's your third one right?
MRM: Yea.
HS: How many more you got left?
MRM: Well I'm contracted for 3 with the option of a 4th so the next one after this isn't guaranteed so this is it for now but there's a strong chance I'll be back. I wanna be back. I love the character. It's my dream role I've always wanted to play and I'm selfish, I don't want anyone else to play him. But there's some rights issues going on right with the studio. We may change studios. If we do they may wanna start with someone else, which is what I'm hearing, so hopefully it stays with Sony and I get to do one more, if not, who knows what will happen.
HS: Yea fingers crossed man. I love what you been doing so far with it, I honestly think you're my favorite Bond right now, ever. I mean that. I know Sean Connery fans would think that's crazy to see but I really mean that.
MRM: Thank you man thank you. So anyway, in this film Bond has been at it for a while and he is starting to learn more about his past. M died in the last film. She was like a mother to him. The only one who got through to him. Now a new M has taken over and he doesn't really think he knows what he's doing, so there's a lack of respect for the chain of command there. Meanwhile there's a villain played by Christoph Waltz who has come in and turned Bond's life upside down revealing some secrets from his past plus we got the first real cool evil henchman the franchise has seen in a long time with David Bautista playing Mr. Hinx. He's gonna be amazing! And the Bond girls this time are stunning as ever. Penelope Cruz and Lea Seydoux. They both have really interesting backstories and play their character really well.
HS: It opens Wednesday right?
MRM: Yes sir. Go see it in IMAX!
